What Belongs in a Bespoke Lighting Shop Drawing Package? A Guide for Architects and Designers
When a lighting fixture is made to order, the shop drawing package is the agreement between what was designed and what gets built. For architects and interior designers specifying stone fixtures for the first time, understanding what this package should contain — and what questions to ask — significantly reduces problems at installation and handover.
Why shop drawings matter for stone lighting
Stone fixtures introduce variables that off-the-shelf products do not: the structural load at the ceiling point, the weight and thickness of the specific stone batch, the path of the driver and wiring, and the precise relationship between the stone geometry and the light source position. Without a shop drawing package, these variables are resolved on site — under time pressure, by people who may not have the design intent in front of them.
A complete package makes all of these variables explicit and gives the installing contractor, the electrical engineer, and the interior designer a shared document to sign off before fabrication begins.
The documents OYLIN provides on confirmed bespoke projects
On confirmed bespoke projects — after concept retainer and drawing approval — OYLIN provides the following:
- DWG electrical layout — ceiling box position, wire path, driver location, and electrical connection requirements for the installing electrician.
- 3DM or KS shop drawings — three-dimensional geometry with assembly method, material callouts, and installation sequence.
- Shop drawings in PDF — for site use and contractor coordination.
- IES photometric file — where the LED module and fixture geometry allow a standardised photometric measurement. Not all stone fixtures produce a meaningful IES file, and we will advise on this during the design stage.
Revit: project-specific, not a public library
We do not maintain a public Revit download library for a straightforward reason: a Revit family for a made-to-order fixture is not meaningful without the specific geometry, electrical specification, and stone batch data of that project. A generic Revit family does not reflect your actual fixture.
After drawing approval, we build the project-specific Revit family on request. Allow 5–10 additional business days from drawing approval for the Revit family delivery. The family reflects your confirmed fixture geometry, not a placeholder.
What to ask your manufacturer before specifying
Before committing to a made-to-order stone fixture, confirm with the manufacturer:
- What is the maximum suspended weight their ceiling mount system is rated for?
- Is the driver remote or integrated, and where does it locate in the ceiling?
- What is the electrical connection method — hard-wire or field-replaceable connector?
- What tolerance applies to the stone dimensions?
- Can the fixture be adjusted on site if the ceiling height changes?
- What does the shop drawing package include, and at what stage is it delivered?
Getting answers to these questions before the concept retainer stage saves time and prevents scope changes after fabrication has begun.
How the review should be organised
A good review is not a single aesthetic sign-off. The interior designer should confirm dimensions, material direction and visible finish. The electrical consultant or qualified electrician should review supply, driver location, dimming protocol and access. The contractor should confirm ceiling build-up, backing, tolerances and installation sequence. Where the fixture load or support condition requires it, the project's structural engineer should confirm the supporting construction.
Comments should be consolidated before they return to the fabricator. Conflicting mark-ups from several consultants create ambiguity and can lead to an approval that nobody fully owns. One coordinated issue log—drawing number, revision, comment, owner and disposition—keeps the package traceable.
Revision control and approval gates
Every sheet should show a drawing number, revision, date, project name and status such as for review, for approval or for construction. Superseded files should remain archived but clearly marked. Written approval should refer to a specific revision; an email saying “looks good” without a drawing number is not a reliable production release.
After approval, any requested change should be assessed for effect on stone procurement, machining, electrical components, certification, price and programme. Even a small dimensional change can alter suspension geometry or the position of a joint. The safest sequence is therefore deliberate: resolve the concept, coordinate the technical package, approve a named revision, then release fabrication.
Handover information to retain
- Final approved and as-built drawings where applicable.
- Electrical and dimming information for the installed light source and driver.
- Stone and finish identification, care guidance and approved variation record.
- Installation photographs, service access notes and replacement-part contacts.
- Project and fixture references that allow future support teams to identify the commission.
