MATERIAL CARE · QUIET MAINTENANCE
Care begins by knowing what the surface is.
Stone and brass are not interchangeable finishes. Their mineral family, surface treatment and environment determine what is safe. Use the guidance below for routine care; project-specific instructions supplied with a commission take priority.
Everyday principles
- Dust with a clean, soft, non-abrasive cloth.
- Blot spills; do not spread liquid across porous stone.
- Use the least moisture and least aggressive cleaner required.
- Test any product in a concealed area first.
- Disconnect electrical power and allow the fixture to cool before cleaning.
- Never spray cleaner directly into seams, LED cavities, switches or fittings.
Material guide
Travertine and marble
Both are commonly calcareous and acid-sensitive. Avoid vinegar, lemon, descaler, acidic bathroom cleaner, abrasive powder, strong alkali and rust remover. Use water or a pH-neutral cleaner made for natural stone on a soft cloth, then dry.
Calcite onyx
Treat calcite-based translucent stone as acid-sensitive. Use a slightly damp soft cloth and dry immediately. Avoid immersion, heat, abrasives and aggressive cleaners. Never attempt to polish a backlit composite surface without project guidance.
Gypsum alabaster
Use a dry, soft cloth. Avoid water saturation, steam, acids, alkalis, abrasives and heat. Its softer surface should be protected from hard tools and jewellery during cleaning.
Quartzite and siliceous stone
Commercial classification varies, so retain pH-neutral care unless the project record states otherwise. Never use hydrofluoric-acid products.
Unlacquered brass
Natural darkening, fingerprints and brown-gold patina are expected. Dust dry. If the patina is desired, do not polish. If a brighter finish is requested, first confirm that the surface is unlacquered and test a brass-compatible product away from adjoining stone.
When to stop and contact OYLIN
Stop cleaning if you see an open crack, loose fitting, powdering metal, deep pitting, electrical flicker, heat discolouration, water inside a light cavity or damage around a fixing. Photograph the overall fixture and the affected area before moving or disassembling it.
Transport and storage
Do not lift a fixture by its cable, shade, stone edge or projecting hardware. Retain the original crate and internal supports where practical. For storage, keep the fixture dry, stable and protected from impact, temperature extremes and direct contact between brass and aggressive packaging materials.
