The Scar on the Staircase

There is a scar on the staircase of my home.

The steps are made of solid marble, two centimetres thick and heavy—embodying a previous generation's entire imagination of "solidity" and "permanence." For twenty years, every time I walk up or down, my eyes subconsciously catch the edge of the second step. There is an irregular chip there, exposing the pale interior of the stone like a broken tooth.

I made that scar with my own hands.

Twenty years ago, my father insisted on buying a marble coffee table weighing over a hundred kilograms. It was the romance and obsession of the older generation: "heirloom" equalled "heavy." They firmly believed that as long as an object was hard enough, heavy enough, and expensive enough, it could defeat time and stand as a spiritual monument anchored in place.

But his wish failed.

When my husband and I decided it was time for a change, that coffee table became an immovable irony. We used all our strength, but it seemed rooted to the floor. Finally, we had to use a skateboard to try and move it. At the exact moment we turned the corner, the massive stone slipped from our control and slammed violently into the staircase landing. With a piercing crack, a corner of the two-centimetre-thick marble step broke off.

In that moment, the air froze. We collapsed on the floor, sweating and defeated.

Suddenly, I understood: Weight without boundaries is never wealth; it is a punishment on daily life.

The previous generation tried to use the physical weight of matter to resist time, but in doing so, they used overly rigid objects to lock away the freedom of the next generation to change. True inheritance should not be forcing an immovable boulder upon your descendants. It should be passing on the freedom to move forward unburdened, toward a new life.

This is the origin of OYLIN. We trust the warmth and longevity of natural stone, but we reject undisciplined "dead weight."

We use the intelligence of design to tame rigid matter. What we create are objects that can gracefully accompany you as you move, adapting to any new chapter of your life.

Why Stone

Natural stone does not pretend. Every vein, void, and surface irregularity is a record of geological time — not a flaw to be corrected, but a fact to be read. We work with travertine, alabaster, and lasurite because they hold light the way memory holds detail: selectively, warmly, and with depth.

Why Light

Light is the material that changes everything around it. A stone lamp does not merely illuminate — it translates. Under 2700K, travertine becomes amber. Under 3000K, the same stone reads cooler, more architectural. We design for that difference.
