Calcite Onyx vs Gypsum Alabaster: What Interior Designers Need to Know Before Specifying
Both are sold as alabaster in the trade. Both are used for stone lighting. But calcite onyx and gypsum alabaster are mineralogically different materials, and they behave differently under light, over time, and in installation. Here is the distinction designers need before specifying either.
Mineralogy: what they actually are
Gypsum alabaster is a fine-grained form of calcium sulfate (CaSO₄·2H₂O). It is the material historically used for sculpture, architectural ornament, and ecclesiastical art — prized for its fine surface and warm translucency. It is relatively soft (Mohs 2), which allows exceptional surface finish but makes it more vulnerable to scratching and moisture absorption.
Calcite onyx is a banded calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), formed in cave and spring environments as travertine-adjacent deposits. It is harder (Mohs 3), more varied in banding pattern, and typically more dramatic in appearance. The term "onyx" in the stone trade refers to this material — it is unrelated to the black gemstone of the same name.
Light transmission: how they differ
Both materials are translucent when cut thin enough, but they transmit light differently. Gypsum alabaster scatters light more evenly across its surface, producing a soft, diffuse glow with little directionality. The result reads as a warm, even luminosity — the quality associated with classical alabaster sculpture lit from within.
Calcite onyx transmits light along its banding. When backlit, the internal banding pattern becomes visible — the fixture reveals its geological structure. This produces a more graphic, layered, and directional quality of light. Whether this is desirable depends entirely on the design intent.
Durability and care
Gypsum alabaster is more moisture-sensitive. It should not be used in wet environments, should be cleaned only with a barely damp cloth, and may show surface changes with prolonged humidity exposure. Its softness (Mohs 2) means it scratches more easily than harder stones.
Calcite onyx is harder but still reactive to acids — avoid citrus-based or acidic cleaners on either material. Both are inappropriate for exterior use without specific protective treatment. Neither should be steam-cleaned.
Which to specify and when
Specify gypsum alabaster when the design calls for a historical material quality, an even and soft diffuse glow, and a surface that reads almost monolithic — without visible internal structure. It integrates quietly into a room.
Specify calcite onyx when the design can accommodate (or celebrates) the visible banding under light, when a more dramatic material character is appropriate, and when the fixture is meant to be read as a geological object as much as a lighting instrument.
In both cases: the LED module position relative to the stone determines whether the internal character of the material is activated or suppressed. A lamp that places the light source at the stone's edge will read differently from one that centres the source within the stone volume.
How to compare samples responsibly
Names in the stone trade are useful starting points, but they should not replace a material record. Ask the supplier to identify the mineral family, commercial name, source region where available, finish, thickness and any resin, wax or sealer applied. This matters because two pieces sold under the same commercial label can behave differently in fabrication and under light.
View each sample with the proposed light source at several distances. A source placed directly against the stone may reveal intense local banding and hotspots; greater setback generally produces a broader field of illumination. Also examine the sample unlit. A fixture is part of the interior during daylight and when switched off, so colour, veining and surface quality must work in both states.
For installation, confirm weight, edge vulnerability, fixing method, ventilation around the light engine and access for future service. Do not assume that a care method suitable for a carbonate stone is safe for gypsum alabaster. Project-specific instructions should identify the exact surface and finish supplied.
A simple specification checklist
- Record the material's mineral family and trade name.
- Approve the actual batch or an explicitly labelled reference sample.
- Confirm thickness, finish, treatment and acceptable natural variation.
- Test the intended CCT and dimming range with the proposed module.
- Document moisture limits, cleaning method and service access.
- Coordinate the fixing and electrical details before fabrication.
