The Weight Dilemma
Natural stone is heavy. For a table lamp or a suspended fixture, excessive weight restricts placement and complicates installation. To achieve "Gentle Permanence," we must remove weight without compromising the structural integrity of the stone. This is achieved through core boring and 5-axis waterjet milling.
Waterjet Milling: Sculpting with Pressure
In our Zhongshan atelier, we use high-pressure waterjet technology to hollow out the internal volume of solid travertine and alabaster blocks. This cold-cutting process is critical: traditional thermal or friction cutting can introduce micro-fissures into the stone, which might remain invisible until the fixture is installed and subjected to the thermal expansion of a light source.
By removing up to 40% of the internal mass, a sculptural block of stone becomes a functional lighting body—weighing safely under our 15kg limit.
The 24-Hour Aging Stress Test
Stone is a natural insulator, which means it retains heat. When an LED module operates inside a stone enclosure, thermal management is the difference between a fixture that lasts decades and one that fails in months.
Every made-to-order OYLIN fixture undergoes a mandatory 24-hour full-load electric aging test before packaging. The fixture is powered on in a temperature-controlled chamber, allowing us to monitor the LED driver's thermal output and observe how the specific stone batch dissipates heat. Only fixtures that maintain a stable internal temperature without inducing stress on the stone or the electrical components are certified for dispatch.
