The Origins

Alabaster is a fine-grained, massive sedimentary calcium sulfate, revered for centuries for its luminous, translucent qualities. Unlike marble, which is opaque and cold, alabaster possesses an intrinsic warmth. At OYLIN, we source our alabaster primarily from the historic quarries of Aragon, Spain—a region celebrated globally for yielding stone of unparalleled purity and breathtaking cloud-like veining.

Formed over millions of years through the slow evaporation of ancient seas, every block of alabaster captures a geological epoch. The subtle variations in mineral deposits create the unique veins and milky white opacities that make each OYLIN lighting piece a true sculptural artifact, impossible to replicate.

The Luminous Glow

The true magic of alabaster is revealed when it interacts with light. In its natural state, it appears as a solid, grounded piece of sculpture. However, when illuminated from within, the stone transforms. It diffuses light with a soft, ethereal glow, eliminating harsh shadows and bathing the surrounding space in a quiet, inviting ambiance.

For architectural lighting, its physical parameters are exceptional. When paired with a warm 2700K to 3000K color temperature, the stone filters the light to create a deeply rich, golden luminescence. This natural diffusion makes alabaster the perfect medium for OYLIN’s fixtures, bridging the gap between functional illumination and art—striking centerpieces whether turned on or off.

The Crafting Process

Working with alabaster requires a delicate balance of traditional artisanship and modern restraint. Mass-produced machine carving strips natural stone of its soul; a machine cannot read the internal veins or anticipate the natural fractures of the calcium sulfate. This is why we insist on hand-carving.

• Selection: Our artisans hand-select raw boulders, examining the structural integrity and aesthetic veining before the first cut is made.
• Carving: The stone is meticulously shaped by master craftsmen. Every chisel and turn respects the natural tension of the stone, honoring its unique characteristics rather than forcing it into identical molds.
• Polishing: The surface is hand-polished to a matte or satin finish, retaining the stone's organic, tactile quality—what we call the 'Quiet Luxury' touch.

Care & Longevity

Alabaster is an incredibly durable natural material that can easily last for generations. To maintain its pristine luminous quality over the decades, we recommend a few simple rituals:

• Dusting: A gentle sweep with a soft, dry microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled brush is all it takes to keep the surface radiant.
• Cleaning: To preserve its delicate surface, we recommend avoiding harsh liquid chemical cleaners. Should a spill occur, simply wipe it away promptly with a slightly damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth.
• Environment: Like fine art, alabaster is best enjoyed indoors. Keeping it away from excessive moisture or extreme outdoor elements will ensure it ages gracefully alongside your space.
