The Origins

Alabaster is a fine-grained, massive variety of gypsum, revered for centuries for its luminous, translucent qualities. Unlike marble, which is opaque and cold, alabaster possesses an intrinsic warmth. At OYLIN, we source our alabaster primarily from the historic quarries of Aragon, Spain—a region celebrated globally for yielding stone of unparalleled purity and breathtaking cloud-like veining.

Formed over millions of years through the evaporation of ancient seas, every block of alabaster tells a geological story. The subtle variations in mineral deposits create the unique veins and milky white opacities that make each OYLIN lighting piece a one-of-a-kind sculptural artifact.

The Luminous Glow

The true magic of alabaster is revealed when it interacts with light. In its natural state, it appears as a solid, grounded piece of sculpture. However, when illuminated from within, the stone transforms. It diffuses light with a soft, ethereal glow, eliminating harsh shadows and bathing the surrounding space in a warm, inviting ambiance.

The Crafting Process

Working with alabaster requires a delicate balance of traditional artisanship and modern precision. The stone is inherently softer than marble, demanding immense skill to carve, turn, and polish without fracturing its delicate internal structure.

• Selection: Our artisans hand-select raw boulders, examining the structural integrity and aesthetic veining.
• Carving: The stone is meticulously shaped using custom tools, slowly revealing the intended silhouette.
• Polishing: The surface is hand-polished to a matte or satin finish, retaining the stone's organic, tactile quality—what we call the 'Quiet Luxury' touch.

Care & Maintenance

Alabaster is a porous and delicate natural stone. To preserve its beauty for generations, please observe the following care guidelines:

• Dusting: Gently dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled brush.
• Cleaning: Never use water, liquid cleaners, or harsh chemicals, as they can permanently stain or dissolve the stone. If necessary, use a lightly damp cloth followed immediately by a dry cloth.
• Environment: Keep alabaster pieces away from extreme humidity, direct prolonged sunlight, and sudden temperature changes.
